The combination of Hajj and Umrah
4) The meaning of the hram.
After finishing the above preparations, you can enter ihram state. Ihram means the intention to accomplish the specific rite of Hajj or Umrah. This intention, which can also be expressed in silence, commences the state of ihram. It is better that such intention be expressed after one of the five daily prayers. If it does not coincide with one of these prayers, it must be preceded by a prayer of two rakah: except for periods when it is forbidden to perform such prayer: that is, after the prayers of Fajr and Asr. In this case you can enter ihram without prayers. If you intend to perform Hajj or Umrah on behalf of a third person, you should express your intention by saying

5) The combination of Hajj and Umrah.
There are three possibilities: to complete the Umrah and the Hajj separately but later, combine them, perform the Hajj only.
to. Separate the Hajj from the Umrah. Separation means that the pilgrim, when he enters ihram in the proper place for him, manifests his intention to perform the Umrah. After completing the Umrah, he exits from the state of ihram for the Umrah and, at a later moment, comes again to ihram state manifesting the intention to perform Hajj. However, those who do not reside in Mecca must offer a sacrificial animal (as he seized the Haji's opportunity to perform the "little pilgrimage" as well.
b. Matching Hajj and Umrah means, when entering ihram in the appropriate location, manifesting the intention to carry Hajj and Umrah together. There is also the possibility, however, of limiting the initial intention to Umrah alone and manifesting the intention for the Hajj later, but before the Ka'ba's perambulation. In both cases, you must remain in ihram state for a longer period than in the case of separation, that is, until the end of the stone's throw on the Day of 'Eid. After that the pilgrim will shave their hair or slit them (all, it is not enough to just sling a few haircuts as some do), and if he has manifested the intention for Hajj later, he must offer a sacrifice like In the case of separation.
c. Perform Hajj only. The pilgrim must manifest this intention when he enters ihram at the specified points. He, in that case, remains in ihram until the end of the stone's throw on the Day of 'Eid. After that he proceeds to shave or cut the hair and leaves the state of ihram. No sacrifice is due (however, one can always offer a voluntary sacrifice).
All of the above will be discussed in more detail later on.
